More Than 90% of Nursing Facilities Employ Workers With Criminal Record

More than 90 percent of nursing homes employ one or more people who have been convicted of at least one crime, federal investigators said Wednesday in a new report. In addition, they said, 5 percent of all nursing home employees have at least one criminal conviction.

The report was issued by Daniel R. Levinson, inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, who obtained the names of more than 35,000 nursing home employees and then checked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to see if they had criminal records.

“Our analysis of F.B.I. criminal history records revealed that 92 percent of nursing facilities employed at least one individual with at least one criminal conviction,” Mr. Levinson said. “Nearly half of nursing facilities employed five or more individuals with at least one conviction. For example, a nursing facility with a total of 164 employees had 34 employees with at least one conviction each.”

I believe it and it's a national disgrace.

It makes me sick. Many of our vulnerable elderly and disabled are completely unable to defend themselves.

Facilities who are found to have employed felons should be heavily fined. That would encourage them to do necessary background checks up front before hiring.

The CEO's of the nursing facilities can hardly make it to the bank with their gold, and they pay their employees minimum wage for one of the toughest and most important jobs in the world.

Oh, what a surprise look. Just think about the 10% that didn't get caught!

Would this be allowed if these were statistics from DAY CARE CENTERs for children?

Priorities folks, add up the money where it's being spent and it isn't on those who came before us this is how American says THANK YOU!!! to the older generation who built this country with hard work, sweat and tears keep this in mind as we pay our taxes talk about a ponzi scheme makes Bernie Madoff look like a brownie scout or a saint in my book.

I agree with StandUp, if the nursing homes had to pay a stiff fine, they'd pay for good help and do a better job all around.
