Tallahassee woman arrested in elderly exploitation case

Kiera Smith
A Tallahassee woman has been accused of stealing more than $1,214 from a 91-year-old for whom she served as a part-time nurse.

Kiera Smith, 22, faces 39 counts, including credit card fraud, use of another person's identification, exploiting the elderly and other charges, after police say she repeatedly used an elderly woman's credit card without consent.

Smith, whose mother is the primary nurse for the elderly woman, was arrested by the Leon County Sheriff's Office and is being held at the Leon County Jail on a $39,000 bond.

Deputies say that Smith, over the course of three weeks, used the 91-year-old woman's credit card at gas stations, stores and to withdraw money from ATMs throughout Tallahassee.

Smith's mother later told investigators her daughter admitted using the credit card without permission while she was on the street drug Molly.

The victim's son became worried and checked bank statements that indicated his mother's card had been used fraudulently 18 times over three weeks. LCSO deputies obtained surveillance video from several stores that showed Smith using the credit card.
